Ir Prof Philip W K CHUNG

Adjunct Professor

Department of Earth & Planetary Science

University of Hong Kong

Ir Prof Philip CHUNG is an adjunct professor of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences of HKU. He has been teaching MSc courses on soil mechanics, ground investigation, laboratory testing and geotechnical design since 2000.  He was a former deputy head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office of the HKSAR Government.  Ir Prof CHUNG has been working in the engineering field for 40 years. He is particularly interested in the research and development work on laboratory testing,  slope design, reclamation and fill compaction.  He also has a keen interest in engineering education and in particular, teaching the young engineers.   He has been appointed by the Hong Kong Accreditation Services as a technical assessor on geotechnical testing since 1994.  He has served the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee 101 since 2005.  Ir Prof CHUNG is also a well-known amateur astronomer in Hong Kong.  He was past vice president of the Hong Kong Astronomical Society and led the Theoretical Astronomy Group for more than 15 years.

Past Chairman of HKIE Geotechnical Division

Victor Li graduated from the HKU and obtained a PhD degree from The University of New South Wales. His experience covers academia, consulting and contracting. He is past chairman of HKIE Geotechnical Division and Building Division, AGS (HK) and the RGE Registration Committee. He had also been members of various committees for drafting design code or guidance documents, including the Code of Practice for Foundations 2017 Edition.

 

He is founder of Victor Li & Associates Ltd. Over the 35 years, he has been keen in exploring innovative methods in his consultancy work and conducting practical research for advancing the geotechnical practice in Hong Kong. He has extensive practical and research experiences in both design and construction of foundation works, including driven piles, jacked piles, socketed H-piles, bored piles and more recently on offshore driven tubular piles.

 

Dr. Li has 200 publications covering a wide range of topics including surveying, reinforcement concrete design, quality control of concrete, coastal engineering, slope stability analysis, reliability analysis, limit state design and foundation engineering.  

 

Dr. Li is now semi-retired and currently spends his time writing a book on foundation engineering.
